Who’s punching their ticket to NCAAs?

boiseindoor

As of January 26th there have only been 31 individual qualifying marks achieved over the entire range of women’s and men’s individual events, which means all to play for and plenty of qualifying positions remain available as we head into February. In terms of British and Irish interest there have been great starts to the season from Rich Peters and Dave McCarthy, who top the NCAA performance lists in the mile and 3000m. However, if previous results are anything to go by, then both will have to improve their times in order to qualify for the NCAA Championships which take place in Idaho in March.

To give an idea of what it takes to qualify, we have produced a table that shows what the 16th ranked performance was in each individual event over the last three years. As we mentioned in our indoor preview article, 16th on the ranking list will usually be either the last qualifier to make the NCAA meet, or the first one not to. The 2012 performances are those achieved up to and including 26th January. Obviously we expect the 2012 standard to improve significantly over the next few weeks before the qualifying deadline.

British and Irish Athletes currently in a top 16 qualifying spot are:

Mens Womens
Mile Auto Mark : 3.57.90 Mile Auto Mark : 4.37.00
1 Rich Peters Boston 4.00.13 3 Kirsty Legg Butler 4.40.86
(17) Katie Clark Butler 4.45.80
3000 Auto Mark : 7.52.30
1 David McCarthy Providence 7.56.76 3000 Auto Mark : 9:10.00
15 Tom Curr Butler 8,13.47 3 Kirsty Legg Butler 9.19.60
16 Ross Clarke Butler 8.13.52 4 Hannah Brooks FSU 9.20.11
13 Katie Clark Butler 9.27.09

You need only look at the events and see that all but a few events have progressed over the year 2010-2011. One year is not large enough timeframe to generalise over the trend developing, but it is patently obvious with such a high percentage of the events requiring a better mark to make the top 16, that there has been a significant jump. This is also evident outdoors.

There are only two athletes in the entire NCAA from Ireland and GB who have previously attained this year’s qualifying standards. They are both in the mile. Chris O’Hare and Dave McCarthy have both bettered the 3:57.90 automatic mark for this year in 2011 and 2009 respectively.
