The NCAA Weekend Review – Millrose, Husky & more

The weekend of 11th/12th February 2012 shall forever be known as the weekend the NCAA went mad. Two American records, two collegiate records, a huge number of NCAA automatic qualifiers, and some high quality performances by British and Irish athletes.  Yes, another typical weekend of indoor action that took place stateside. Nationals leads in the mile now read 3:54 for men and 4:28 for women….

Chris O’Hare of Tulsa consolidated his 3:56 mile from 2011 with a repeat performance to finish 6th in the famous Wanamaker Mile. He was followed by Irishman Dave McCarthy (3.57.86), which although was not a PB, was nevertheless a great performance and he continues his fine indoor season. Both men will look back on the meet as good race practice despite BYU’s Miles Batty beating them to the collegiate record in a time of 3:54.54 off negative splits. O’Hare picked up the auto qualifying mark in the process.

DCU’s DMR team were narrowly edged out by Villanova with the Irishmen clocking 9:39 in the college race at the Millrose.

Boston’s Richard Peters had perhaps the biggest win of his career at the Valentine’s Invitational, leading five athletes under 4 minutes with his 3:57.83, an auto mark by 0.07.

The other British automatic qualifiers this weekend came from Ross Millington and Mitch Goose at the notoriously fast Dempsey track, Washington. Huge PBs of 7:49 and 7:51 ensured that both athletes will be toeing the line in Boise in 4 weeks. Tom Farrell now lurks in 13th place in the rankings and will most likely need to go 0.08s quicker to be certain of a place alongside Goose and Millington.

Mention must also be made to recent FSU graduate Ciaran O’Lionaird. The Nike Oregon Project Runner continued his smooth transition into the professional ranks by finishing sixth in a world class mile at the USATF Classic in Arkansas (3:54.76).

Below is a table of how the qualifying is shaping up. As explained in our indoor preview article, the performance of the 16th ranked athlete is given. Given the number of automatic qualifiers we are seeing in the distance events, this could likely reduce the number of qualifiers in the sprints and field events to perhaps only the top 14 or 15 athletes per event. There are currently no British or Irish ladies with qualifying marks so hopefully they can redress the imbalance in the coming weeks.

Not NCAA related but we’re using, and abusing,  our editorial privileges to say a massive well done to Lewis Moses in winning the 1500 at the UK Indoor trials and booking his place on the GB&NI Worlds team. Proof that hard work and consistency pays off.
