Conference Weekend Wrap-up

Another exciting weekend is now in the history books with the conclusion of the conference championships, and for many athletes, it will signal the end of the indoor season.

There were many British and Irish athletes in action over the weekend, with most middle and long distances athletes doubling (and in some cases tripling) in order to score valuable points for their teams. Whilst there were many Brit Irish athletes, performance of the weekend is a toss-up between Tulsa’s Chris O’Hare and Butler’s Tom Curr and Katie Clark. O’Hare’s wins over the 800m and mile helped Tulsa  to win the the Conference-USA Championships for the first time in school history,. The Golden Hurricane were able to upset the much larger Houston squad, who have won the title for the last five years. UAB’s Sarah Hudak pulled off a Mile, 3000, 5000 triple in the same meet as her team hosted the conference for the first time in many years on their new indoor facility.

The British Butler Bulldogs continued their long dominance of the Horizon League distances events, with the quartet of Ross Clarke, Harry Ellis, Callum Hawkins, and Tom Curr all contributing strongly. Katie Clark must be singled out for a brilliant triple which resulted in 28 points for the Bulldogs. Tom Curr’s double in the 800 and 1500 was also very impressive, in 1:50 and 4:07.

Other mentions must go to a great double by Josephine Moultrie in the MWC, and Danielle Walker in the MVC. Meanwhile Tom Farrell learnt a harsh lesson in the Big12 Mile Final in which a premature celebration resulted in being out-dipped and relegated to second place (insert hashtag here). Also, Joe Wade represented Lamar admirably with a Abel Xavier bleached blonde beard. Mairead Murphy of Kansas State also set a National Irish Pentathlon record in the Big12s.

Arkansas lived up to their number one ranking to win yet another SEC title, and they will surely start NCAAs as favourites. On the women’s side, Stanford upset Oregon to win the competitive MPSF conference title. The lady Ducks could only manage third behind Stanford and Arizona.

Athletes now have one more weekend to qualify for NCAA’s and this is quite appropriately known as ‘Last chance weekend.’ Later in the week we will be giving a full break down of who’s in, who’s out and what it will likely take to qualify in each event.

See below for a full list of known British and Irish performances from this past weekend, see below.
