Last Chance Round Up

In the end it turned out to be a relatively quiet ‘last chance’ weekend for the British and Irish athletes. A case of one race too many, or in several cases just coming up a little short, meant that there were only two British athletes able to add their names to the list of potential qualifiers.

Last chance really does tend to only be used by athletes who are chasing qualifying times; hence the lower numbers of competing athletes than normal. Following a tough conference weekend, the majority of athletes are quite possibly having a bit of down time before outdoors, or for those who have qualified they will be getting ready for next week.

Regarding those who did compete, there were two British standout performances over the weekend. New Mexico Lobo Sarah Waldron smashed her 5000m PB to finish second at Notre Dame in 15.59.93. This run places her 13th in the rankings, which all but guarantees her a place in next week’s championship field.

Florida State athlete David Forrester broke 4.00 in the mile for the first time, finishing third at Notre Dame in 3.59.13. However, such is the standard this year that this is only good enough for 23rd on the descending order list. Whilst 23rd is a long way off the top 16, there are numerous athletes ranked higher than him who may well scratch from the mile to concentrate on different events, so he does have a chance of qualifying.

Despite not racing, Tom Farrell remains 16th in the 3000m rankings, a precarious position that will mean he is either one of the last in or first out. Anthony Lieghio slipped to 18th in the 800m rankings, and will now have to rely on scratches in order to qualify.
