And so NCAA outdoor begins…

Although there have been a few low-key meets already, weekend just past signalled the start of the season for many. Many of the bigger names will leave it another few weeks until Stanford comes a’ calling.

Here’s who competed, and ‘who done what’.

It is worth noting that, without actually knowing full details, we can assume that Iona literally told their athletes to jog around a quarter mile just to score points for the team. For those non-NCAA buffs, there is a minimum number of scored meets that each team must compete in each year, and looks exactly like one of the old box-ticking run-a-rounds. Another such memorable meet, from our perspective, was running in 3 inches of snow at the Tulsa Duels. That day the men’s 800m was won in 2:48 by a 1:48 man, while the women’s went one second quicker. The Oklahoma State coach also showed how seriously he was taking the meet by instigating a snowball fight and pelting his own sprinters during their 200m.

So, here’s what we got. Notable runs from athletes stepping up distances, namely Toby Ulm and James Alaka. Both are featured athletes.
