NCAA Weekend Review – Stanford & more

NCAA outdoor British track results

NCAA definitely underway now for BritIrish athletes

When a weekend brings meets such as the Stanford Invitational, Florida Relays and the Sun Angel Classic, you know the NCAA outdoor season is definitely underway.

In our recent article about Californian distance meets, we outlined the many reason for the times produced on the west coast. This went far enough to validate our points further. While many of the top sprinters perform on the east coast, due to proximity of the dominate SEC schools, distance instead head west.

first major weekend of the NCAA outdoor season saw plenty of British and Irish athletes in action. Highlights included PB performances at Stanford over 10000m from Sarah Waldron (32.36) and Matt Bond (29.08). Waldron’s performances ranks her 2nd in the NCAA, and with the UKA Olympic ‘B’ standard set at 32.10, she may well be attempting another fast 10,000m later in the season. Adams State athlete Matt Bond was comfortably inside the DII automatic qualifying standard for the 10,000m with his 29.08. There were a host of other athletes competing at Stanford, with many achieving PBs. NCAA mile runner-up Rich Peters demonstrated his range of endurance with a very impressive 13:56 debut 5000m. This mark will easy qualify him for regionals in the event should he choose to double up.

Tom Farrell, (who appears to be redshirting) bettered his previous 1500m PB by over a second to finish 3rd in the 1500m in 3.41.07. More importantly perhaps, this run puts further daylight between Tom and his father David in the family all time 1500m ranking lists.  Elsewhere, James Alaka finished 2nd in both the 100m (10.36) and 200m (20.90) at the Pepsi Invitational. Impressive early season form, though he will no doubt be looking to peak much later in the season. Matthew Graham also put in 15000 volume over the weekend at the Chicagoland meet winning both the 10000 and 5000.
