James Alaka hits the A Standard

We said last week in our preview that the British and Irish athletes would be kept busy over the weekend. Indeed we were not wrong: The fruits of this labour resulted in 14 Individual conference wins by 12 athletes, as well as many other athletes finishing in the crucial top eight scoring positions for their teams.  David Rooney (5000m & 10000m) and NCAA mile champion Chris O’Hare (800m & 1500m) were impressive double winners in the Southland and Conference-USA events respectively. However, the highlight and our athlete of the week accolade goes to Washington junior James Alaka. The British sprinter powered to victory in the 200m at the highly competitive Pac 12 Conference in a time of 20.45. Not only was this a massive improvement from his personal best, it is also inside the Olympic A Standard qualifying time of 20.55 and places him top of this years UK rankings. Our feature  on James Alaka in 2011 is here.

Oklahoma State hammer thrower Nick Miller extended his winning streak to 5 consecutive competitions by picking up the Big 12 title with a throw of 66.00m. The freshman has only been beaten once this year outdoors and will be one to watch as we head towards the business end of the season.

Elsewhere, the Wade twins picked up valuable wins for Lamar in the 1500m (Tom) and 3000m s/c (Joe), and both will now head onwards to the west regional meet.

Away from conference action David Forrester was the pick of the performances. His time of 3.41.44 was the fastest he has run for 3 seasons and also safely qualifies him for regionals.

For the majority of collegiate athletes, conference will close the curtain on another collegiate season, and it will be time to relax and enjoy the summer, or for graduating seniors it could signal the end of their competitive careers. However, for the elite the season still has much left to offer. The regional round of the NCAA Championships takes place in two weeks time, and this will act as the qualifier for the NCAA Championships, to be held in Des Moines, Iowa.

We will of course be previewing all British and Irish qualifiers for regionals when the lists are released later this week.
