Matt Gillespie breaks through at the Wisconsin Invitational

Scottish athlete Matt Gillespie produced a stunning breakthrough to finish 3rd at the Adidas Wisconsin Invitational. Running in arguably what is the highest quality meet of the regular NCAA season, the Scottish athlete trailed only Arizona Kenyans Lawi Lalang and Stephen Sambu, with the former being the reigning NCAA Cross Country champion. Dispelling the myth that it typically takes a while for foreigners to become comfortable with the standard of NCAA competition,  remarkably this was only Gillespie’s second ever collegiate cross country race.  Further still, is that prior to today he had no serious cross country credentials to his name and a 5000m best that currently stands at ‘only’ 13.57.  Behind him there was a solid run from Iona teammate Mitch Goose who finished 8th in an excellent time of 23:35. Dan Clorley was the other British athlete to go under 24 minutes, finishing 29th in 23.51.

Perennial powerhouse Stanford narrowly edged out Iona to take the team win, though the major shock of the day on the mens side was defending team champions and top ranked Wisconsin finishing well down in 17th. However, with several notable absentees including Olympian Mo Ahmed, expect the badgers to come good when it truly matters in six weeks time, providing no redshirts are played.

It was not such a great day for the British and Irish women with only New Mexico duo Joesphine Moultrie (9th) and Charlotte Arter (44th) finishing inside the top 100.

After some initial confusion with the results and chip timing devices,  below is what we believe to be an accurate listing of the British and Irish results. Full results are here.

We will have a full weekend round-up on Sunday or Monday once all meet results are in.
