Weekend 3 Preview – Boston Terrier & more

The Boston Terrier meet takes centre stage in the NCAA this weekend. In a world-class mile, Galen Rupp is rumoured to be attempting a 3:50 mile so the pace is set for anyone who wishes to follow. Facility record holder, Ireland’s David McCarthy, makes his way Stateside most probably to see his 3:55 mark from last year broken in this very race. Rich Peters will be red-shirting, therefore running unattached, but Scot, Stuart Ross, is also entered in the mile as is Iona’s Matt Gillespie. With every other athlete in the race boasting at least a 3:59 mile, it will be sink or swim for these two athletes. Former Boston sub-4 miler, David Proctor, will be competing in the 3000m, along with Dan Clorley and Kevin Cooper.

It would be disingenuous to say that it is the only meet on at the weekend. Heading west to Seattle, everybody’s favourite oversize track plays host the UW Invitational. Stanford and Oregon are in town. However, this meet appears to feature little or no British or Irish interest.

The New Balance Games also take place at the Armory.

In the men’s mile, Andy Baddeley, James Brewer and Tom Lancashire are on the start line in a race with 1:44 man Robbie Andrews. The women’s race will featyre Barbara Parker as well as new US Junior record holder, and Alberto Salazar’s prodidy, over 3000m, Mary Cain.

Elsewhere, there are dozens upon dozens of indoor meets occurring simultaneously. Full list of all meets can be found here. This represents the second week of true collegiate action so expect to see legitimate national leads across the country this year. And remember, you don’t need to be at the so called big meets to qualify for Nationals. Good luck to all.
