Husky Invite Results – NCAA Track Week 5 Results

ncaaindoor

Well, if you were wondering when all the qualifiers for nationals came out to play, it was this weekend. In events nationwide, this weekend will have contributed a substantial number of qualifiers come judgement day when the NCAA announce the fields for Nationals. In terms of British and Irish qualifiers, we have the following athletes in top 16 positions, and at this moment in time, in a qualifying position.

Chris O’Hare Tulsa 800m 1:48.28 8th
Antony Lieghio Arkansas 800m 1:48.56 12th
Thomas Farrell OSU Mile 3:58.20 6th
Matt Gillespie Iona Mile 3:58.55 8th
Thomas Farrell OSU 3000m 7:51.77 9th
Luke Caldwell New Mexico 5000m 13:40.39 7th
Nick Miller OSU Weight Throw 20.97m 6th
Ejiro Okoro Iowa State 800m 2:06.4 6th
Jo Moultrie New Mexico Mile 4:36.59 11th
Georgia Peel FSU Mile 4:37.21 12th
Jo Moultrie New Mexico 3000m 9:06.32 8th
Lorraine Ugen TCU Long Jump 6.20m 15th

This weekend was the weekend of the Husky (Invite). In Seattle, the University of Washington Huskies played host to the best distance event of the indoor season. While the mile was predominately packed up by Oregon TC Pros, the 5000m contributed 14 of the top 16 times in the country. UNM’s Luke Caldwell had the breakthrough that you can only dream of by obliterating his PB by 56 seconds to clock 13:40, which will be good enough for a place at Nationals. Likewise for Tom Farrell, after a few years of sitting ‘on the bubble’ with touch and go times, his 7:51 3000m mark again should be more than enough to merit a place at Fayetteville. He is also ranked 6th in the mile but would clearly favour the longer distance at the Champs. Chris O’Hare won the Tyson Invitational in 1:48.2 (video here), a new PB, while Irishman Lieghio returned to form with 1:48 to leave him precariously on the edge at this point.

On the women’s side, Jo Moultrie followed Farrell’s footsteps in placing in the top 16 in two events after a 4:36 mile, shadowed closely by FSU Freshman Georgia Peel. At 11th and 12th and still last chance weekend and conferences to come, these positions are at risk of slipping out. Moultrie’s 8th ranked 9:06 3000m however should be good enough. Eji Okoro, of Iowa State, stormed up the half-mile descending order list with a 2:06 mark.

Outside of those currently residing in the Sweet Sixteen, there were notable performances and PBs for Sarah Hudak and Eli Kirk of UAB, Sam Evans of UNM, Luke Carroll of Illinois, Ieuan Thomas of DII outfit Western State.

The NCAA roadshow moves on next week to the largely professional Millrose Games. Chris O’Hare will attack the collegiate mile record, while a few Conferences take place (Big East to name one).

Below are all known results from the weekend.

In other news, keep an eye on the site over the next few days for an interview with a well respected UK sprinter, as well as a nod to the new biography of the NCAA’s most illustrious coach, Irishman John McDonnell. Oh, and we take a look at the mile event again. Just why are we so successful at it?
