2013 Indoor Conference Preview

1c803_pg2_ncaa_conferences_576

Other than the small matter of Chris O’Hare running a mile in 3.52, last weekend was fairly quiet on the collegiate front. Only a few of the major conference meets took place, which means the vast majority are scheduled for this weekend. Atlantic-10 and Big East took place last weekend, and results can be found here.

Conference sees team rivalries from cross country being renewed, and many athletes will be doubling or even tripling in order to score maximum points for the team. It will also be the first championship of the season for the non-endurance athletes. The same format as cross country is used where schools compete within their own conference, with team and individual titles being up for grabs. However, just because conferences are championship events, do not be fooled into thinking that distance races will end up being slow and tactical affairs. On the contrary, due to the fact that conference meets are usually held on good tracks, we can almost guarantee that there will be numerous top 16 qualifying performances achieved this weekend throughout the nation. It also represents the penultimate weekend to post national qualifiers, with next week’s last chance weekend being, well, the last chance.

With the sheer number of British and Irish athletes competing in the US in 2013, there will be domestic representation in all the major and most mid major conferences.  The meets listed below are those where we anticipate that British or Irish athletes will be competing. We will conclude the weekend, as usual, with a full round-up of the results. Also listed are the British and Irish athletes currently ranked in the all important top 16 qualifying positions in their respective events. Unlike the British Athletics selection methods employed for the European Indoor Championships, qualification into the NCAA meet is completely objective, meaning that  we can say with certainty who is in and who is out.
