Weekend 5 Preview - USA Athletics Scholarships

Weekend 5 Preview

NCAA outdoor British track results

Fresh off their top 10 national times last week, Butler’s Tom Curr  and Ross Clarke will sit out this weekend along with the rest of the Butler squad in anticipation of next week’s regular season highlight, the Mt SAC relays.  With only the top 48 in each region, East and West, qualifying through to their respective Regional meet, the next few weeks will see the majority of the qualifiers in situ.

Listed below are the main meets occurring this weekend where there will be numerous British and Irish participants. The Metropolitan Championships annually are the first of the conference meets. Manhattan College and Iona both have British and Irish interest at this meet.

With Mt SAC a week away, this may turn out to be a relatively quiet week on the distance front, but expect plenty of high quality sprint, jump and throw performances. The John McDonnell Invitational at Fayetteville Arkansas is a hugely competitive meet with many of the big west power-houses taking up the challenge. Expect action from Oklahoma State here, along with hosts Arkansas,   Oklahoma, Missouri and Iowa. Brown will play host to Providence in their home meet, while Boston Terriers are heading for George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, VA. The New Mexico squad head to Colorado for the Air Force hosted dual meet. Tulsa head to Nebraska for a quad meet.

This week also gave birth to the news that both Ireland and Great Britain will feature DMR teams in the Penn Relays, 24-25th April. Ireland have announced a DMR team with Ciaran O’Lionaird on the anchor mile leg and Junior record holder Mark English taking on the third leg (800m). Matt McLaughlin is reported to be running a leg for the GB team.

A full list of the weekend’s meets can be found here.

While the team element of track is slightly diluted compared to its XC counterpart, it still is massively important to coaches and athletes alike. The teams with the bigger budgets and higher enrollments usually win this battle. 2013 team rankings are here.

Elsewhere, we are working on a new series that should start to materialise soon. We hope this will add to athlete features and articles that we have published to date, in order to give a more in-depth and extensive look at life in the NCAA as a student-athlete.
