NCAA Day two round up

After the fireworks of two titles on day one, there was a disappointing second day at Haywayd Field as 7 British athletes were eliminated at the semi final stage of the NCAA Championships.

Attempting to end his Washington career by qualifying for his first NCAA final, four time meet qualifier James Alaka wwas not able to improve on his season’s best time of 20.97. Such is the standard in the sprints, 20.33 was the slowest time to make the final, a time that would not look out of place in Diamond League meets. This comes after the men’s 100m, where 10.08 was needed to make the final.

Last years 1500m 6th placer Rich Peters will not be making a repeat performance in the final. This year the Boston athlete was unable to live with the 3:41 pace that would have been needed to advance from his semi.

Nick Miller (HT) and Breandan O’Neil (10,000em) both finished in the unfortunate position of 9th, narrowly missing the All-American ¬†positions by one spot. After struggling with his early throws, Miller never appeared to find any of the momentum that led him to enter the competition as one of the highest ranked. Likewise, despite a relatively fast last lap in the 10,000m, O’Neil could not quite chase down Jared Ward of BYU for the final All-American spot.

The four-strong British contingent performed admirably in the women’s 1500m, though none of them were quite able to raise their level of performances enough to advance.
