Notre Dame XC Special

notredame

The annual Notre Dame XC Invitational took place on Friday 4th October in humid and soft going conditions, leading to slower and steadier times than last year’s meet. Tulsa’s Andy Heyes suffered badly in the conditions and was grateful to see ND medical staff such was the heat. We were present to see how the British & Irish athletes faired, with photos and interviews below.

Last year Tulsa’s Chris O’Hare took the men’s title in 23:33 to lead his Tulsa team to the win, but this year came back in 8th place, with fellow team-mate Marc Scott (7th) and New Mexico’s Luke Caldwell (2nd). The race was won by UTEP’s Kenyan Rotich in 24:18 for the 8km course. Team honours went to Ivy League Columbia, with Tulsa boys in second, and New Mexico in 6th, FSU in 10th, Illinois in 12th and Lamar in 13th. Full results of all Irish and British athletes are outlined below.

In the women’s race, like the men, there were 3 top 10 finishers. FSU transfer, from Birmingham, Hannah Walker showed her credentials with a 4th place finish, and Lamar’s Leigh Lattimore (LLL) continued her impressive start to the season in 5th. New Mexico’s Charlotte Arter rounded out the top 10.  FSU took team honours, with UNM closely behind in second.

The depth in both races wasn’t quite as high as in previous years, so it’s hard to tell how much impact the team scores will have later in the season. (Teams that finish outside the top 2 in each region can still qualify for the NCAA XC meet through a complex system of points scored amassed during the year – more information on that system is here)

Apologies to the ladies for no media content. We arrived only in time for the men’s race.
