Conference Weekend Results

NCAA

Conference Weekend 2013 has been and gone, and with it a total of 4 individual titles in the form of Clements and Avery (Iona), Kirk (UAB) and Black (Bryant).  There were also some dubious course lengths on show – we’re looking at you Big12. The ‘8K’ distance was covered by Kennedy Kithuka in 22:18, which is 2:47 kms. Even for him, this isn’t possible.

For many this means there is only more race remaining; the Regional Meet. For those that fail to qualify either as an individual or as part of a team, this means the longer distances of Regionals, (10km for the men, and 6km for the women) will be their last. The list of Regions can be found here. Unlike track where there are only 2 regions, East and West, in cross country there are nine.

Away from individual victories, the British/Irish heavy teams such as Tulsa, Lamar and New Mexico all took both men and women’s titles on the day. Butler switched conferences for the second time in two years and now find themselves in worlds apart from the 2011 Horizon League, competing against historically top XC teams such as Providence, Georgetown and Villanova. in the Big East. The women stepped up admirably to finish third in the arguably the toughest women’s conference in the country.

As a result we have to give Providence’s Sarah Collins the Athlete of the Week accolade for her 3rd place finish in that very conference. The Irish athlete was amongst elite company and looks well placed to be in contention for a another top 10 finish at NCAAs at the end of the month.
