NCAA Indoor Championships Final Results

Day one

Lorraine Ugen lived up to her billing as favourite in the women’s long jump by adding the indoor title to her outdoor accolades from last year. Leaping out to a massive new indoor personal best of 6.73 in the fifth round, the TCU athlete was able to win the competition by a huge margin from Chanice Porter (6.34). As well as 6.73, Ugen’s series also included marks of 6.51, 6.55, and 6.41, all underlining how dominant she was in Albuquerque yesterday.

We said in our preview that Nick Miller would be looking to improve on last year’s 4th place, and that was exactly what he did. Adding over a metre to his lifetime best, the Oklahoma State athlete’s second round toss of 23.07 would be good enough to claim the runner up spot, finishing narrowly behind only Michael Lurhman of Wisconsin. With finishes of 12th, 4th, and now 2nd indoors, Miller will have one more year to try and claim an NCAA title.

On the track there were mixed fortunes for the British athletes in the 800m and mile. Rich Peters impressed in winning the second heat of the mens mile, and with that advancing to today’s final. Running in the same heat, unfortunately Matt Gillespie was unable to book his place. However, he will have another bite at the cherry as he will reload for the 3000m final today. Eji Okoro also narrowly avoided making the final for the second year in a row. The Iowa State senior narrowly missed out by one spot and 0.14 seconds.

The long distance athletes all performed admirably in the 5000, with all four returning top 10 finishes. Luke Caldwell was the pick of the bunch with his 6th place, a slight improvement from last years 8th. He was followed in by fellow New Mexico athlete Adam Bitchell in 9th, whilst on the ladies side Hannah Walker and Eli Kirk finished 9th and 10th respectively.

Day two

Elinor Kirk doubled back from the 5000m in superb fashion to take third place in the 3000m. Having narrowly made it into the 3000m by virtue of a 9.10 third leg of a treble at the C-USA Championships, the fast improving UAB athlete produced one of the best runs of her career to finish ahead of many athletes with faster times. As we highlighted on twitter recently, since heading to the US Kirk has reduced her PB’s from 9.391/17.00 to 9.10/15.43. Competing in the same race,¬†Iona’s Kate Avery was unable to match her pre-event ranking, finishing in 9th.

Rich Peters added another All-American honour to his collection with a 4th place finish in the mile. In one of the strongest events of the championship, it was won by the outdoor steeplechase champion Anthony Rotich, with collegiate mile record holder and 13.00 5000m man Lawi Lalang in second. Coming back only a couple of hours later in the 3000m was always going to be an extremely tough ask, and unfortunately would lead to a DNF from Peters. Having not made the mile final, Matt Gillespie performed better in the 3000m, finishing 10th.

The final British athlete competing at the weekend was Jax Thoirs in the pole vault. We said he was ranked in the middle of one of the wide open events of the weekend, and this was exactly where he ended up (8th), just the right side of the All-American cut off line. An illustration of how close the event was is that the athletes finishing between 3rd-16th were separated by only 20cm.

Final results are below with All-American performances in bold. We will be back with an end of season indoor summary in the week, and then it is straight to outdoor track.
