Stanford Invitational Preview

Spring has arrived, and with it, the beginning of the 2014 Outdoor Track Season in the NCAA. Although some athletes have already opened their season, the majority of athletes will be toeing the line for the first time this weekend. With some promising results from a few early, low-key events, expect the Irish and British to be out in full force this weekend.

As always, the Stanford Invitational headlines the start of the season, with many distance athletes heading west for the promise of fast races, and near perfect conditions. For more information on the appeal of the West Coast, see our article “California in Spring” here. With over 80 competitions taking place all over the country, it’s a chance for athletes to stamp their mark on the qualifying lists, and book a provisional spot at the Regional Championships.

After a fast and furious Indoor season, where only 16 qualified to run at the National Meet, Outdoor Track offers a more lenient road to the Regional Meet where 48 athletes will qualify for both the East and West Championships. For an idea of the sorts of times that will qualify for the Regional Meet see: Women’s EAST, Women’s WEST, Men’s EAST and Men’s WEST.
