British and Irish results in the NCAA

Weekend Round up and results

Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational

After a couple of warm-up weeks, this weekend was when the collegiate track and field season truly kicked off. For sprinters, jumpers and throwers, this time of year is all about heading South to places like Texas and Florida, whilst distance runners head out West to California in search of those laboratory like conditions usually experienced at Stanford and Mt Sac.  The weekends results illustrate this in full.

Starting with the distance runners..

Stanford as the place to hit fast times needs no introduction. We have talked many times about this and the reasons why it is so good and this tradition continued with a number of high quality performances on Friday. In form Elinor Kirk was once again the stand out performer. She ran a phenomenal 10,000m debut of 32.17 to finish second in a field largely made up of professional athletes. The time also ranks her as the top collegiate so far this year. Fellow British athlete Kate Avery also maintained her solid indoor form to set a personal best of 15:27.90 in the 5000m. She finished 4th (2nd collegiate) in a very competitive 5000m. On the mens side, Adam Bitchell was the pick of the bunch. Not only will his 28.50 comfortably qualify him for the west regional meet, it will also put him in prime spot to make the Welsh team for the Commonwealth Games.

The Stanford Invitational often acts as the curtain raiser for the spring distance meets in California. Later this month is Mt Sac Relays and then in May there are the elite Payton Jordan and Oxy High Performance meetings.

2500 miles away in Flordia, NCAA indoor and outdoor long jump champion Lorraine Ugen improved her seasons best to 6.35, which ranks her 4th on the early season lists.

Weekend results are below. With performances more being about time /distance / height etc, places listed are variable with some being place in a heat, whilst others are the overall placing in an event.
