Super results on Superbowl weekend

Matt Clowes

Superbowl weekend in the US typically involves a lot of overindulging in beer, chicken wings, and dips. However, for the domestic athletes this past weekend, they clearly had other priorities – with a number really performing well to set up potential NCAA qualifying spots.

Although not an NCAA athlete, the star of the show was undoubtedly Concorida’s Matt Clowes.  The man from Stoke pulled off a stunning double at Washington – 3:58.9 in the mile, followed by a 1:51 800m a short while later. Both marks are NAIA national leads and he will no doubt head to those championships as hot favourite in both events. Clowes has made steady improvements every year since moving to Oregon in 2011, though this double clearly shows that he has now stepped up to a completely new level.

Back to the NCAA, the one athlete we can pretty much guarantee a top 16 spot for now is Sam Stabler in the 3000m. He smashed his not only his PB but also the 8 minute barrier for the first time, finishing second at Washington in 7:53. This places him third on the collegiate list and we can say with 99% certainty that there will not be another 14 more athletes faster than this before the end of the month.

Another first time sub 8 3000m runner was Tulsa’s Marc Scott. He took victory at Arkansas in a school record time of 7:55. Another excellent result, though such is the standard in the NCAA, it could be touch and go whether this will remain top 16 at the end of the season. Currently it ranks 7th, though there are stil some very big meets to come.

The final top 16 performer from the weekend was James Mclachlan in the long jump. He leaped out to a seasons best of 7.60 at the Indiana Relays, a mark that currently ranks him 14th. Based on his own results in previous years, we expect that he could improve from this and remain in the top 16 by the end of the season.

Results of all known British athletes are shown below with current top 16 ranked performances highlighted. Positions are generally shown within a specific heat or section rather than for an overall event at a meeting. Irish results will be added throughout the day.
