How does regionals work?

NCAA outdoor British track results

With the conference meets now in the books, we have reached the do or die part of the outdoor track and field season. For the top 48 in each event in the two regions the situation is now simple – finish in the top 12 and qualify for the NCAA’s or if not then the season is over for the summer. We will give a full list of British and Irish qualifiers over the next few days but to start with we will explain the process that determines the final NCAA qualifiers –

  • The top 48 declared athletes in each region (West and East) will contend the two NCAA qualifying meetings
  • Conference champions no longer receive automatic qualification for the regional meet
  • The top 12 from the two regional qualifiers will advance to the NCAA meet, being held in Eugene, Oregon
  • The round structure / process used at the regional meetings to determine the qualifiers will vary depending between the different track and field events
  • The West regional meet takes place in Austin, Texas
  • The East regional meet takes place in North Florida
  • Qualifiers in the heptathlon and decathlon do not take part in a regional meet, instead a descending order list is used.
  • Which region is stronger? The table below will show how close it is, well done to the NCAA on devising such a fair system.
  • What did it take to qualify? See below for the 48th and final declaration in each region (excluding relays)
