Gold for Price

price

Day four in Eugene saw Rhianwedd Price strike gold in the 1500m final in a new personal best time of 4:09.56. Competing for Mississippi State, the Welsh athlete headed to the meet as collegiate leader, having set her previous best time of 4.10 at the regional qualifier. However, heading the ranking makes the task of winning on the day no less easy and in the end the race came to a final 300m showdown with between Price and Shelby Houlihan (Arizona State), with Price taking victory by 9/100th’s of a second.

Reigning NCAA cross Country champion Kate Avery was not able to add to her title collection in the 5000m, though did put up a gallant effort in finishing fourth in a time of 15:41. She fell off the pace set by Emily Sisson (Providence) in the final mile, but still held on to finish highly in a very competitive event.

Calli Thackery (New Mexico) produced an excellent performance, finishing sixth behind Avery in the 5000m. Her time of 15:47 was only a few seconds shy of her Mt Sac time set in April, and any athlete who can get close to their pb at NCAA’s should expect to finish highly, which is exactly what Thackery has done here.

The final athlete in the womens 5000m was Bethan Knights of California. The Briton, who now permanently lives in the US finished in a commendable 16th place, and as a freshman will have three more years to build on this.

The conclusion of the NCAA championships also signifies the end of the collegiate season for 2014/2015. We wish all athletes an enjoyable break over the summer, as well as good luck to those who are continuing to compete for major championship spots.
