Valentines weekend results

Valentines weekend is typically the busiest of the regular part of the collegiate indoor season, and this year proved to be no exception. A huge contingent of British and Irish athletes took to the boards, banks and American football practice facilities seeking to make the most of the fiercely competitive meets. In many cases this resulted in new personal bests, and for a select group of five athletes, they produced all important top 16 ranked performances.

The five were:

200m man Sam Watts. He was second in the high quality Tyson Invitational in 20.60, ahead of fellow top 16 ranked Brit Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake. However Mitchell-Blake’s best of 20.57 set earlier this season does rank him higher overall. Both are ranked in the top 5 in the NCAA and are almost certain to qualify.

Sophie Connor – mile. A converted altitude time ran in Albuquerque –  4.42 to 4.36, this ranks her 8th. At this stage of the season, she would be unlucky if a further nine athletes go on to run quicker, with only conference and last chance meets left.

Marc Scott – his excellent 13.37 5000m indoor personal best and Tulsa record in Iowa ranks him 3rd in the NCAA – absolutely nothing to worry about in terms of qualifying.

Calli Thackery – another distance runner who should be safe. 9.03 for 3000m ranks her 5th.

Jax Thoirs – His excellent 5.48 pole vault on home turf ranks him 5th, and should be enough for a return to the NCAA indoors for the Scot.

Not to be forgotten, one of the performances of the weekend has to go to Adams State middle distance man Oliver Achison. He ran 3.58.6 for the mile in Seattle, easily the fastest in division 2 so far this season.

We say this every year that the indoors is by far the most ruthless and hardest of the three championships to qualify for. Top 16 performers only in each event advance. There are no regionals, no fastest losers and no selectors discretionary picks. Whilst there will of course be further movement in the ranking lists before the qualifying deadline, those currently sitting in the top 10 in their events should be reasonably confident that they can start thinking about a trip to Birmingham, Alabama in March.

Please see below for known British and Irish results from the weekend. Current top 16 ranked performances are in green.
